Coasts of Europe, Mediterranean, Canary Islands, Madeira. Introduced or naturalized on inland waters. The division into subspecies is controversial. Subsp. aegyptiaca (also known as subsp. maritima) occurs in Spain, Portugal and Mediterranean; subsp. integrifolia (also known as subsp. maritima) occurs along the Atlantic coasts of Europe. A subspecies known as C. edentula subsp. islandica (or C. arctica, or C. lapponica) occurs along the northern coast of Scandinavia and Russia. Other subspecies (baltica, euxina) occur in the Baltic and Black Seas
